Life’s a bitch

Can you imagine how Alex Thomson feels right now? Gutted doesn’t do it justice. A friend of mine aptly put his race-ending rudder break, presumably caused by a collision of some sort (the world’s oceans are littered with debris) as “the tombola of offshore racing” and it’s poor, poor luck for Britain’s offshore icon.

But this latest Hugo Boss has been a bit of a nightmare from the outset. First the keel nearly falls off, then the bow frames crack and now the rudder sheers. Some boats are just damned unlucky and as throw-away items, this one should just be stripped of the technical bits and chopped up. I don’t suppose it can be recycled?

As for Alex, well it’s a long week of nursing the boat to Cape Town. Time to sit and reflect and plan again. He can’t give up now and four years goes quickly in this game. It might be a little harder to convince the sponsors in the current climate but there’s money out there and Alex is gutsy enough and British enough to get it. Never say die. Never.
