So it’s being reported that the stylish Italians “have an advantage” going into this month’s Christmas regatta, the first time that the AC boats have ‘officially’ lined-up against each other. “The only thing we have seen is the quality of manoeuvres and I would say for the moment that we have an advantage. Our manoeuvres are carried out perfectly,” says one of the co-designers Martin Fischer. Well we’ve been here before…
Back in the days of the 12 Metres, the sailors used to say that “you can tell when the Italians are going to tack because they throw their fags over the side.” Oh how times have changed culturally, not necessarily for the better, but changed nonetheless.
I bet the Prada boys are furious with Fischer for coming out with that nonsense and it will be fascinating to see how the first races go. Words such as these have the awful habit of coming back to bite. We shall see. I would personally love to see the Italians doing well – let’s be honest, they have THE coolest boat and their gear is off-the-scale awesome – if a wee bit pricey for my liking. I’m keeping my eye on the AC store for when they get knocked out and those jackets are being flogged off at a discount.
Form an orderly queue behind.
